Californian Poppy – Eschscholzia California 

There are many members of the Poppy family and they all to a greater or lesser event promote sleep and ease pain. In the South Lakes we have an abundance of Welsh Poppies which are all yellow, Californian Poppies are a similar size and shape but the flowers are a different shade of orange and the leaves are much finer.

The flowers and leaves are used.

although not in the same league as the Opium Poppy, this Poppy also encourages sleep – it seems to enable people with busy minds to switch off and go to sleep.  Most importantly it’s not addictive, at least not at the levels I use.  It has a reputation for easing the pain of gallbladder colic.
