The Plot has had many incarnations since it was originally rented and cultivated. It is a plot of land of about half an acre on Urswick Road near Croftlands just outside Ulverston. It doesn't have any running water or electricity and this has led to some creative solutions - a compost toilet, a poly tunnel with an underground water tank to provide warm water for watering plants and as a source of heat for the tunnel during unexpected drops in temperature . It also has what was originally a large shed but it has evolved into a Club House - this is available to rent by arrangement with Val at Natterjacks on Queen's Street
Initially The Plot was part of Roots and Shoots a Social Enterprise Co Operative which worked with Manna House the homeless Charity in Kendal - gardening and cooking with clients there. It also ran a variety of projects at the Children's Centre in Ulverston as well as helping them establish a small garden for children and their parents to play in and enjoy.
The plot was established to encourage people to garden together, share expertise and grow vegetables organically - even selling vegetables at Urswick village Hall every Wednesday for a while. Then it was taken over and given a new lease of life as The Ulverston Permaculture Project - this involved giving the plot a complete make over and involving a more diverse range of people sharing a wide range of skills including music, charcoal making, getting involved with Ulverston's Incredible Edible project and generally having fun.
Currently The Plot is run by a hard core group of enthusiasts who continue to embrace permaculture principles and also grow flowers as well as vegetables organically, it is a beautiful tranquil space for people to enjoy - the gardeners are there on occasional Saturdays and some Wednesday mornings.
The Medicine Garden has had close links with The Plot throughout it's different incarnations and runs courses there from time to time as well as a summer solstice event which takes up a whole weekend and has a rolling program of plant and food based entertainment - this often happens in June quite close to the 21st. In effect the 'Garden' of the Medicine Garden.
